At Activus Recruitment, we know that very few careers follow a straight line.
That's why we're proud to support Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) North East's #NoWrongPath Week – a campaign that encourages young people to understand there's no single route to success. Whether you're receiving exam results, starting your first job, considering further education or changing direction altogether, there really is no wrong path.
This year, two members of our team shared their own career journeys, proving that the opportunities you take – and sometimes the unexpected challenges you face – can shape a rewarding career.
When Yvonne left school, she imagined herself "wearing a wig" – pursuing a career in criminal law. Instead, she started as an Office Junior before progressing into a Legal Secretary role.
From there, her career took another unexpected turn into the Oil & Gas industry, where she spent 13 years before joining Activus Recruitment as our Business Development Lead.
Reflecting on her journey, Yvonne says:
"Life doesn't always go to plan, and that's okay. Being open to new opportunities can take you in directions you never expected. The skills and experience you gain are never wasted, and sometimes the best opportunities come when you step outside your comfort zone. Most importantly, be yourself, trust your abilities and don't be afraid to back yourself. Everyone's journey is different, so enjoy the path you're on."
Judy wasn't sure what career she wanted growing up. She considered becoming a midwife or nurse, but during her teenage years she developed a chronic illness, which meant missing a significant amount of school during important exam years.
Through determination, she achieved the grades needed to attend university, but after two years her health deteriorated, and she had to leave her course. Later in her career, her health also led to her losing a job.
Despite these setbacks, Judy continued to embrace new opportunities, eventually building a successful career in marketing, which led to working for Activus Recruitment.
Her advice is simple but powerful:
"Sometimes not having a plan is the best plan. Say yes to opportunities and give everything 100%. Be thankful for those who help you along the way. Nobody knows what's around the corner, but if you work hard, you'll get there."

As exam results season approaches, it's important to remember that your results don't define your future.
There are many routes into a successful career, and every experience helps you grow, develop new skills and discover opportunities you may never have considered.
Whether you're entering the workplace, looking for an apprenticeship, continuing your studies or considering a different direction, remember:
There is no wrong path – only your path.
If you're ready to take the next step in your career, Activus Recruitment is here to help.
